Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt

Welcome: Industrialization in the 21st Century

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt completed his studies of Electrical Engineering with the specialisation on Communications Engineering at the Technical University of Aachen in 1989. After his basic military service he became scientific employee in the Department of Metrology and Quality Management at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL). His focus of work lay in the field of production-related Metrology and Communications Engineering in an automised environment.

In 1997 Professor Schmitt moved on to MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG (commercial vehicles) in Munich where he took on leading positions in the fields of Quality and Production. Since 2002 he was responsible for the commercial vehicle production in Steyr, Austria. The focus here was the standardisation and modularisation for the project goal of the 15-day-truck on-demand without storage. MAN Austria´s new production concept was honoured with the Autoland-Austria-Award in 2004.

On September 1st, 2004 he was appointed to the Chair for Metrology and Quality Management at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL), Technical University of Aachen. He has been member of the Board of Directors at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT since January 2005. In 2010 he became Managing Director of the WZL.
